West Ham midfielder Gary O’Neil is set to sign a new deal at the club after weeks of negotiations, according to Sky Sports.

The former Middlesbrough and Portsmouth man was set to be released by the Hammers next week as the club begins pre-season training but a second round of talks seem to have convinced the player to stay.

O’Neil stepped into a crucial role in the East London side towards the end of the season as injuries to Mark Noble and Jack Collison gave him his chance which he took.

The 30 year old is the latest piece of business to be done by the Hammers this summer after Andy Carroll, Adrian and Razvan Rat all joined the squad with two or three more players set to join Sam Allardyce in the coming weeks.

The competition for places in rife in the West Ham squad, especially in midfield, and so O’Neil may have needed certain assurances before putting pen to paper on a new deal.
